What is a Mentalist ?
A mentalist is a “psychic” entertainer whose illusions feature the apparent ability to read minds, foretell the future, and see distant and hidden objects.
Based on Wikipedia, mentalism is a performing art in which the practitioner uses his five senses to create the illusion of a sixth. Performers may claim to be demonstrating supernatural abilities such as telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and telekinesis.
Arguably, mentalism is a branch of magic, featuring many of the same basic tools and skills in its performance. Some mentalists use these techniques to give the impression that they actually possess supernatural powers.
Is a Mentalist psychic ?
The term “psychic” has been a bit overused and abused in today’s media. It conjures up everything from carnival fortune tellers to the infamous “Psychic Hot Line.” I think it is fair to say that everyone has the potential to exercise some level of extrasensory or non-physical power.
Much like a sense that can be sharpened to compensate for the loss of another sense or the way human memory can be expanded and sharpened, one’s psychic potential is always an unknown until it is revealed and explored.
The ability to focus on that potential and to expand its boundaries is at the heart of a psychic’s extrasensory power. So in a way, Yes, a mentalist is a psychic.
Is mentalism a practice that can be taught ?
Anyone can become a mentalist if they spend the spend enough time studying and practicing the art and they really have the passion it takes to persevere.
Anyone can do simple mentalism if they have the resources to learn. Especially with the internet the possibilities of learning mentalism are endless.
How can mentalists read your mind ?
They do not read your mind, they just use some tricks and find out your thoughts indirectly. For example, one trick is when the mentalist makes you pick a card, and after some arrangements he tells what your card was without looking through the card deck. These kinds of tricks are easy ones that can be done by anyone.
But what about great routines ?
Those when a mentalist chooses someone in the audience, asks him to take an object from his pocket. Meanwhile, the mentalist is turned around, he stares at the object, thinks what it might be, and asks the person to put it back.
Suddenly, the mentalist turn around, goes into a little trance and tells what the object as. Once again, this just a parlor trick as many others. For those who love this trick is not recommended to tell the solution, but there are many sources which provide great information about stuff like this.
There are many people who really enjoy such shows and some are intrigued because nothing of this is truly real.
